Project: „Rehabilitation of historically polluted site – location: Former Chemical Factory (Village Crangurile)”

Beneficiary: Local Council Crangurile, Village Crangurile, Dambovita County, Romania


The project was performed within 2012 – 2013 and involved the following activities:
  • Additional activities;
  • Design: Technical Project elaboration and execution details, elaboration of documentations to get approvals/permits;
  • Site organization and connection to utilities;
  • Waste and vegetation disposal from land surface, demolition of ruins;
  • Excavation of first meter of contaminated soil and mounds from entire site (abt. 20,000 m²), soil sorting and washing (abt. 21,000 m³) and removal of residues from soil washing (abt. 4,200 m³);
  • Stabilization/solidification of about 40,000 m3 contaminated soil from an area of about 8,000 m²;
  • Treated soil refilling/compaction;
  • Import of filling soil – 1,200 m³ and top soil – abt. 3,000 m³;
  • Installation of 18 ground water monitoring wells.

Quantities of processed waste:
  • Demolition of platforms and building ruins, clearing vegetation, hazardous and non-hazardous waste packaging and transport to authorized recovery and disposal facilities – 154 tons of non-hazardous waste and 89 tons of hazardous waste (including treatment and disposal of vials and arsenic containing waste);
  • Excavation of 63,875 m³ contaminated soil;
  • Treatment by sorting and washing of 22,474 m³ chrome contaminated soil (hexavalent and trivalent), Arsenic, Lead, heavy metals and chemical waste;
  • Removal and treatment of 4.488 m³ contaminated sludge/cakes resulted from washing operation;
  • Treatment by stabilization/solidification of 41,475 m³ chrome contaminated soil (hexavalent and trivalent), Arsenic, Lead, heavy metals and chemical waste by using additives and binders for the conversion of soluble compounds into insoluble compounds, resulting in a volume of 57,167 m³ of stabilized material;
  • Import of filling soil – 1,200 m³ and top soil – abt. 3,000 m³;
  • Refilling and compaction of treated and filling soil: 76,318 m³;
  • Distribution of topsoil and grassing a surface of 20,000 m² using 1.5 tons of seeds.
